Rameshwaram temple (Ramanathaswamy Temple) is situated on a small island in the Indian Ocean at Rameswaram place in Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu. This temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and four Dhamas. Lord Sri Rama and Sita Mata worshiped here by making Shivling themselves and hence its importance is also high. Lord Rama killed Ravana and Ravana was a Shiva devotee as well as a Brahmin. Therefore, Lord Shri Rama returned back and worshiped Lord Shiva by making a Shiva lingam in this place to prevent the killing of Brahm Dosha. Temple was started by King Vijay Raghunath Sethupathi in 1722, the corridor of Rameshwar Temple is the largest temple corridor in the world.
Story of Two Shivlingam
When Lord Rama killed Ravana and returned to India with Sita Mata. they didn’t see any Shivling around. So he asked Hanuman Ji to go and get a Shivling from Kashi. Hanuman Ji immediately left for Kashi to take Shivling. Then Lord Shree Rama Ji thought that Kashi is far away so that there is no delay in coming to Hanuman Ji, so he made a sand lingam with Sita Mata Ji and start worshiping. Hanuman Ji was Pawanputra. So in a while, he brought Shivling from Kashi. But when he saw that Lord Rama was already worshiping Lord Shiva, Hanuman Ji was very disappointed. Lord Shree Ram Ji established and worshiped both Shivalingas to remove the disappointment of Hanuman.
And it was also said that whoever comes here to worship here, he will have to do the first worship of Hanumant Shivling( the Shivling brought by Hanuman) then Ramanatha Shivling made by Ram Ji.
Inside Rameshwaram temple (Ramanathaswamy Temple)
There is another Shiva lingam in the temple. Which is also called Nagamani Shivalinga. Adi Guru Shankaracharya offered this Shivling in the temple. Its darshan duration is only one hour in the whole day. This is a temple of Rameshwaram to Shiva but there are many other temples inside it. The temple of Lord Vishnu called Sethumadhava is prominent among them. Ramanatha Temple is a specimen of exquisite workmanship in the Dravidian style. This temple is on 15 acres of land. It has 22 pools that have different water for different pilgrimages. Before performing the puja, the worshiper takes bath first in Agniteertham than from water of 22 Kunds after that go to worship. Its water is holy and miraculous, in which bathing removes all diseases.
Lord Sri Rama started construction of a bridge across the ocean from this place for climbing in Lanka. Building a bridge in the Dhanushkodi Ocean was a very difficult task. Therefore the Banar Sena kept writing the name of Ram in each stone. And it floated instead of sinking. Such stones We can see in Rameswaram. Later they broke the bridge in Vibhishan’s request from where The bridge was broken, that place is called Dhanushkoti.
There has been much evidence that there was a bridge in the Indian Ocean from Rameswaram to Jaffna Sri Lanka. Even NASA scientists have also confirmed that the evidence of Ram Setu between Rameshwar and Sri Lanka appear to be in the Indian Ocean. They also released a picture of it.
