Kamakhya Devi Temple Guwahati is on the Nilachal Hill in the Western part of Guwahati city in Assam. This is the both, 1 from 51 Shakti Peethas and 1 of 4 Adi Shakti Peethas. History of Kamakhya Devi. Goddess Kamakhya was very beautiful. Once Demon king Narkasur expressed his desire to marry Goddess Kamakhya. Goddess told the demon. If you could construct stairs of stone everywhere on the Nil Parvat, and a rest house near Kamakhya temple within one night. So I will become your wife according to your wish. Demon king agreed and began to construct. He had completed stairs around the hill before morning. Before constructing a rest house he had enough time so he had slept. Stopping fulfillment of the commitment Goddess took the form of a cock and shouting.
Demon thought night was over and he lost a bet. As he came to know the goddess made him fool. He followed cock and killed it on the bank of Brahmaputra River. Latter Lord Vishnu killed demon Narkasur. After the death of Narkasur His son Bhagdutt became the king of Kaamrupa. Due to obstruction of darshan at the Kamakhya Devi temple and disturbing the worship, the goddess left from here. Maharishi Vashistha got angry and cursed extinction here. Kamadeva had lost his virility due to a curse. Therefore, to regain his virginity, he again worshiped and penance in this goddess’s temple.
Ambubachi Mela in Kamakhya Devi
Ambubachi Mela is a very famous fair not only in India but also out of the country. This happens only once in a year. Ambubachi Mela is the festival for those who believe in Tantra and Mantra. This festival is celebrated three days continue in every year on 22, 23, 24 June. Ambubachi Festival is the Rajswala ( menstrual) festival of Goddess Durga. Temple closes for these three days. Legend this is the time of Goddess’s menstrual. So nobody can enter the temple. Before it, a long cloth is kept inside the temple and distributed in part to devotees as a Prashad. These three days the water of Brahmaputra River becomes red. During these three days, women pray for fertility.
